I regularly use Hesh Shikakai in my Indian herb washes. I find it to be a very effective but gentle cleanser that adds slip to my hair. I use it in tea form, although it is typically used in the form of paste for the hair and scalp.
The package features a "best use before" date, but many times, it will be left blank. Because of this, the quality of product can vary. However, I have found that it cleanses well despite age. Older herbs may clump, though.
If you can find a local Indian grocery selling shikakai, it can usually be purchased quite inexpensively compared to over the Internet. Average price in my area is around $2 to $3 for a 100-gram box. The amount of washes per box varies based on your washing method.
WARNING: Shikakai will sting your eyes severely, so take care when applying and rinsing.

I have just tried this and have to say its an excellent product and a fully natural way of washing hair. Its more time consuming than a conventional shampoo and makes a bit of a mess but the positives outweigh this.
I mixed 2 tbs in hot water and made a mud type substance, which i smeared all over my hair, i forgot to strain it so it was a bit grainy and loads splashed all over the sink but the results; shinny, smooth and strangely thicker feeling hair.
For anybody wanting to try Indian herbs as an alternative to shampoo, I highly recommend this product, give it a go you will not be sorry!
